Danny Werfel, the acting commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the US, has chosen the deputy he wants to be responsible for the Large Business and International division.

John Dalrymple is rejoining the IRS from Deloitte Consulting to become the deputy commissioner for services and enforcement.

"This is a critical leadership position for the IRS touching on everything from taxpayer service to tax enforcement issues,” Werfel said.

The deputy commissioner for services and enforcement provides direction to the Wage and Investment; Large Business & International; Small Business/Self-Employed and Tax Exempt and Government Entities divisions of the IRS. Dalrymple will also oversee the IRS Criminal Investigation Division, Office of Professional Responsibility, Online Services, the Return Preparer Office and IRS Whistleblower Office.

Dalrymple will start his new role on Sept. 16. He previously served as IRS deputy commissioner for operations support from 2003 to 2006. He joined the service in 1975.
