Laurent Engel leads the tax policy, dispute resolution and litigation practice within KPMG in Luxembourg.

Experience

While advising a number of the Top 20 Luxembourg banks over the past 15 years, Laurent has experienced how, for any business or person preparing for or facing a tax audit, appropriate strategies for response and compliance are critical. Without a plan of action, uncertainty, inefficiency and lost opportunities can result.

Long-term view

He believes in long-term relationships. With an exception of two years, where he worked as a member of the Luxembourg Bar in litigation, he has spent his entire career at KPMG. This is where he has experienced all stages of the tax dispute continuum – from pre-transaction analysis and documentation to closing the file on dispute.

Stewardship

To Laurent, "great service is about clients receiving the best quality work, on time and on budget from our firm. It's about listening. About working with clients to help lessen the likelihood of a challenge before a dispute arises, and to resolve those matters that ultimately become the subject of a dispute". His practical and effective approach focuses on determining that a client's tax positions are documented in a way that helps to mitigate tax audit risk. Should a dispute arise, he strives to secure a favourable outcome.

Network

Laurent is fluent in English, French and German. And he is curious – he is at his best when spending time with multijurisdictional teams. By tapping into the network, he has developed a deep understanding of how to resolve large, complex disputes.

Results

This is how Laurent manages to inspire his clients when taking control of the dispute resolution process. This is how he gets results. Locally. Globally.
