In this month's round-up of changes, we feature the continued expansion of Andersen Global, the establishment of a Nordic powerhouse, and new partners joining firms in London, Netherlands, Lima, across the US and many more.

Andersen Global continues its rapid expansion

International tax network Andersen Global has continued to expand its reach across the globe, with a number of new member firms being recruited recently.

This included collaboration agreements with Dr Weder Kauta & Hoveka in Namibia and Muluh & Partners in Cameroon, bringing its presence in Africa up to 18 offices.

It was particularly active in the Balkan region as well, bringing on board Miro Senica and Attorneys in Solvenia, Joksović Stojanović & Partners in Serbia, Kallay & Partners in Croatia and Sajić in in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Outside of the EMEA region, it signed a collaboration agreement with Central Law, a Central American firm, expanding the network's presence in the region to eight locations in six countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.

It also made a rather significant addition in India, welcoming new member firm Nangia Andersen. With more than 350 professionals located around the country, it is one of the largest firms in India and represents a notable new presence for the network.

New York office of Andersen adds managing director to its USNT practice

The New York office of Andersen, the US branch of international tax network Andersen Global, has announced the arrival of a new managing director.

Benno Tamminga joins the firm with more than 23 years of consulting expertise in value-added tax in the United States and globally.

His previous experience included a 15-year spell at Deloitte and six years with Arthur Andersen & Co.

Gibson Dunn & Crutcher bolsters London tax practice

The London office of Gibson Dunn & Crutcher has announced the addition of a new tax partner to its London practice.

Ben Fryer joins the firm from Mayer Brown, where he had most recently served as partner and had been for more than 10 years.

His work covers a wide range of areas including M&A, private equity, capital markets, banking and corporate finance and real estate, as well as corporate reorganisations and debt restructuring.

Cuatrecasas hires new practice head in Lima

International tax firm Cuatrecasas has announced it has hired a new partner to lead the tax practice of its Peruvian office.

Juan Pablo Porto joined the firm from PwC, where he had been for more than seven and half years. He also serves as a professor at the University of Lima.

His arrival brings the number of partners at the Lima branch of the firm up to five and expands the local offering to include a tax partner for the first time.

Nordic firms join together to create Scandinavian powerhouse

In a major development in the Nordic legal market, Swedish firm Hamilton has agreed to join together with Norwegian firm Schjødt in January 2020. The new combined firm will operate under the name Schjødt.

The combination will create one of the few cross-border firms in the Nordics, and one of the biggest by head count with almost 150 lawyers.

New tax partner joins the team at Houthoff

Independent Dutch law firm Houthoff has announced the addition of a new partner to its tax team.

Jeroen van Mourik brings with him more than 15 years of experience and joins the team from the Hong Kong office of EY, where he was a partner and the Dutch and Europe tax desk leader for Asia.

Prior to his position with EY he served at Loyens & Loeff, where he had secondments with major firms in Chicago, London, Tokyo and Sydney.

Barnes & Thornburg adds new partner to its Los Angeles office

US firm Barnes & Thornburg has announced the addition of a new partner to its tax practice in the firm's Los Angeles office.

Stanley Heyman joined the firm's corporate department from Jackson Tidus and brings with him many years' experience in federal, state and local tax planning, estate planning, tax controversy matters, and probate, estate and trust administration. He is a certified public accountant in California.

With more than 600 attorneys and other legal professionals nationwide, the firm is one of the largest in the US.

New York office of Baker McKenzie welcomes new state and local tax partner

International firm Baker McKenzie welcomed a new member to its North American tax practice.

Partner Mark Yopp has joined its New York office from McDermott Will & Emery, where he had been for more than seven years and had served as partner for almost four.

His experience is in income and franchise taxes, sales and use taxes and withholding requirements. He also has an interest in the tax implications related to new and emerging technologies, digital goods and services, cloud computing, electronic commerce and digital marketplaces.

Covington & Burling adds former Treasury official to its ranks

Covington & Burling has announced the addition of a new partner to its tax practice group in Washington DC.

Lindsay Kitzinger rejoins the team from her position as attorney adviser in the Office of International Tax Counsel, within the US Treasury's Office of Tax Policy.

She has extensive experience in tax law, having been involved in the legislation enacted in December 2017, and the regulations implementing the most significant international tax provisions in it. She also served as the main contact point within the Treasury for international tax issues arising in the G7 and G20.

Mayer Brown bolsters London tax practice

The London practice of international law firm Mayer Brown has announced the addition of a new partner to bolster its tax practice.

Matthew Mortimer joined the firm from Milbank, where he had been for more than 12 years. Prior to that, he had spent a further eight years with magic circle firm Allen & Overy.

His work is particularly focused on the taxation of banking, corporate and structured finance transactions, debt restructurings, M&A and investment fund formation, as well as international tax planning.

Washington office of Alston & Bird bolstered by additional partner

The Washington DC office of Alston & Bird has announced that Richard Slowinski has joined its tax practice as a partner.

He arrived at the firm from Baker McKenzie, where he had been for more than 28 years and served in a variety of leaderships.

His practice is focused on international taxation, with an emphasis on global tax planning and controversies involving transfer pricing in a broad range of areas.

Pepper Hamilton announces partner addition to its Philadelphia office

US firm Pepper Hamilton has expanded the tax capabilities of its Philadelphia office with the addition of a new partner.

Saba Ashraf joined the tax and private clients practice group from Ballard Spahr, where she most recently served as the co-leader of the tax group.

She brings with her experience of advising clients worldwide on corporate and partnership taxation matters, as well as the tax aspects of complex business transactions.

Luxembourg office of Norton Rose Fulbright expands its tax capability

The Luxembourg office of international firm Norton Rose Fulbright has welcomed a new partner to its tax practice.

Florent Trouiller joined the firm from Dechert and had previously spent more than 10 years with magic circle firm Allen & Overy.

His practice is largely focused on cross-border private equity and real estate investments, but he also has experience advising on capital markets and securitisation transactions.

India Law Offices announces arrival of new senior partner

Former IRS officer and taxation specialist Rajesh Kumar has been named the new senior partner of India Law Offices.

He joined the firm from Rajesh Kumar and Associates, where he had been for more than 14 years. He was formerly a deputy commissioner for the Indian government.

With more than 22 years of experience in the market, he has a extensive background in tax law and has authored a comprehensive legal commentary on India's recently introduced GST law.

Ballard Spahr welcomes new public finance tax attorney in Baltimore

US firm Ballard Spahr has announced the addition of a new partner to its public finance group in Baltimore.

Marybeth Frantz Orsini joined the firm from Harris Beach, where she had been since 2011 and most recently served as a member.

Her work focuses on federal tax law, with an emphasis on tax-exempt financings, and also covers financings for government, solid waste, manufacturing and industrial development projects, as well as for not-for-profits in the healthcare and education sectors.

Ashurst expands tax capabilities in Germany

International law firm Ashurst has added a partner to its investment funds practice in its Munich office.

Jasmin Gütle joined the team from Linklaters, where she had been for more than 13 years and most recently served as counsel.

She is a qualified tax advisor and focuses on advising semi-institutional investors on fund structuring and investing in alternative investment funds, including private equity, mezzanine, infrastructure, real estate, and private debt.

Stibbe welcomes new tax partner to Luxembourg office

Benelux law firm Stibbe has expanded the capability of its Luxembourg tax practice with the addition of a new partner.

Johan Léonard rejoined the team after more than five years away, having previously served as an associate for almost three years. In the interim, he acted as an associate and senior associate for Luxembourg firm Arendt & Medernach and as counsel and partner with regional Benelux firm NautaDutilh.

His work is largely focused on national and international tax law, structuring and transactional advice to investment funds, private equity firms, real estate conglomerates, financial institutions and multinational groups.

Linklaters London welcomes back former tax practitioner

The London office of magic circle firm Linklaters has announced that former managing associate Chris Smale has rejoined the firm as a partner in its tax practice.

He joins the team having left the firm as a managing associate in 2010 after more than four years at the firm. He served in a variety of senior in-house roles in the interim before joining the partnership at international firm Kirkland & Ellis in November 2018.

His experience, especially from those in-house positions, is largely focused on private equity and corporate tax work.

Lefosse Advogados strengthens capability in the field of oil and gas

Brazilian firm Lefosse Advogados has announced the addition of a new tax partner to its Rio de Janeiro office.

Jayme Freitas joined the firm from GSK, where he served as the tax director for Latin America. Prior to that, he had roles as a tax manager for both BP and OGX Oil and Gas.

Along with his solid knowledge on tax advisory and structuring for direct and indirect taxes, and international transactions, that direct experience in the oil and gas industry means he brings unique insight, connections and knowledge to the firm's tax practice.

Taylor Wessing bolsters London tax practice

International firm Taylor Wessing has announced the addition of a new partner its London office.

Liz Wilson joined the firm's tax and incentives practice from Squire Patton Boggs, where she had been for more than three years and most recently served as a director. Prior to that, she had spent more than 13 years as a senior tax and structuring solicitor with Macfarlanes.

She is dual qualified as a solicitor and a chartered tax advisor with considerable experience working on cross-border tax issues including corporate transactions, private equity, commercial agreements, real estate and construction transactions, projects and debt finance. She also has a wealth of experience across private equity, real estate, hotels and leisure.
