Indian network brings GST one step closer

A new GST network in India has been launched which will implement the IT infrastructure necessary to introduce the new tax.

The network will be led by businessman Nandan Nilekani, chairman of the Technology Advisory Group for Unique Projects.

“We have approved the special purpose vehicle (SPV) and requested Nilekani to go ahead with the IT infrastructure, said Sushil Modi, chairman of the Empowered Group of State finance ministers. “The SPV would solely be responsible for running of the GST portal.”

While GST has been delayed a number of times, the new network is a sign of the government’s commitment to a smooth roll out of the tax. The tax is expected to be implemented in April 2012, but many predict it will be effective from any point beyond July 2012.
