Three African countries have joined the OECD-led Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes.

The Ivory Coast, Niger and Tanzania become the 124th, 125th and 126th members of the organisation which works to facilitate international tax cooperation between its member countries.

"As members, they have committed to implement the international standard of exchange of information on request and to participate in the Global Forum's peer review process, which evaluates countries' legal framework and practices for effective exchange of tax information," said a statement from the Forum welcoming the new arrivals. Kosie Louw, the South African who chairs the Global Forum, added he is confident "these countries will actively participate and gain from the international developments in tax transparency and also take a leading role in the Africa Initiative".

The Africa Initiative was set up in 2014 by the African Tax Administration Forum, CREDAF (Centre de Rencontre des Administrations Fiscales or Francophone tax administrations), the Global Forum, the OECD, the World Bank and individual African members of the Global Forum to help African countries understand how exchange of information could help them combat tax evasion and illicit financial flows, and build capacity within their tax administrations to do this.
