General Atlantic promotes Gosk to CFO role

Global growth equity firm General Atlantic has promoted operating partner Michael Gosk to CFO following the retirement of 25-year incumbent Tom Murphy.

Gosk joined the group in April 2019 from General Electric, where he had been for more than a decade and served in a series of financial leadership roles, most recently chief tax officer prior to joining General Atlantic.

Before GE, he was a partner at global law firm McDermott Will & Emery and a partner at KPMG.

Andersen Global expands its Balkan presence

International tax network Andersen Global has announced the expansion of its network into several new locations in Southeast Europe.

In November, Banja Luka-based SAJIĆ in Bosnia-Herzegovina was the fourth firm in the region to sign a collaboration agreement with the network towards the end of 2019.

The firm includes four partners and nearly 20 professionals and was established in 2003 by founder Aleksandar Sajic.

This was followed by the addition of Law Office Pepeljugoski to the network in North Macedonia, also in November.

The firm was founded by Valentin Pepeljugoski in 1999 and it has since expanded to include Partner Aleksander Trajkovski and more than 15 legal professionals.

Baker McKenzie welcomes new tax team to its Luxembourg office

International firm Baker McKenzie has strengthened its tax practice in Luxembourg with the addition of a team of six lawyers, led by partner Diogo Duarte de Oliveira.

He is joined at the firm by Olivier dal Farra, Delphine Danhoui, Lionel Ancion, Miguel Pinto de Almeida, and Tiphanie Grzeszezak, all of whom arrived from Benelux regional firm Stibbe.

Duarte de Oliveira, who now leads the department at the firm alongside transfer pricing country leader Antonio Weffer, brings with him more than 16 years of experience in the market. In particular, his expertise includes advising asset managers and private and institutional investors on fund raising, management incentive strategies and transaction structuring.

FTI Consulting introduces new managing director of tax advisory service

The team at FTI Consulting has announced the addition of senior tax technology expert Graham Tilbury to its London office.

He serves as the managing director of the tax advisory practice at the firm within its corporate finance and restructuring segment, where he heads the tax technology advisory service offering

Tilbury has significant experience working with businesses on a wide variety of tax technology projects.

PLMJ welcomes new partner to its Lisbon office

Portuguese firm PLMJ has announced the addition of a new partner to its tax practice in the nation's capital.

Isaque Ramos joins the team from McKinsey, where he was responsible for the tax and legal management of projects in Portugal and Africa and where he had been for the last five and half years. Prior to that, he had served as a deputy for the Office of the Secretary of State for Tax Affairs and worked at both EY and KPMG.

His arrival means the firm's tax team – which includes partners Serena Cabrita Neto, Miguel Reis and João Velez de Lima – now has four partners and a total of 25 lawyers.

Andersen Global continues expansion into Africa

Having rapidly expanded its global footprint in recent months, Andersen Global continued to grow its presence in Africa with the addition of a second office in Mozambique.

Partner firm Isálcio Mahanjane Advogado & Associados opened a new office in the city of Beria which, in addition to its existing location in the capital Maputo, gives the international network an even greater presence in the Southern African state.

Led by managing partner Isalcio Mahanjane, the firm has a focus on in providing services in all areas of law to both corporations and individuals.

The network also announced the expansion of its presence in Nigeria as it signed a collaboration agreement with Lagos-based firm, The New Practice.

The firm has more than 20 legal professionals and was founded by managing partner Bab Alokolaro in 2007. It represents the network's third office in Nigeria, in addition to Andersen Tax offices in Abuja and Lagos.

In addition to its Sub-Saharan additions, the network also announced its first foray into the Maghreb region through a collaboration agreement signed with Jelil Bouraoui & Associates in Tunisia.

The Tunis-based firm was founded by managing partner Jelil Bouraoui in 1981 and has more than 40 tax professionals on its roster.

King & Spalding elects new tax partner in New York

International firm King & Spalding has announced the promotion of a new tax partner to its New York practice, as part of a wider programme that saw the election of 21 new partners and promotion of four counsel across eight offices.

The tax partner in question is Conrad Axelrod, who only moved to the firm in April 2019 from his role as special counsel (investment management) at Schulte Roth & Zabel. He represents asset managers and investors across all aspects of private funds at the intersection of corporate, tax, regulatory, ERISA and finance matters.

Toronto office of Blakes welcomes new tax partner

Canadian firm Blake Cassels & Graydon announced the addition of a new tax partner to its office in Toronto.

Amanda Heale joins the firm from Osler Hoskin & Harcourt, where she had been for more than 13 years and served as a partner for the last five, having previously worked for her new firm back in 2005 and 2006.

Her experience is particularly related to international taxation and transfer pricing, M&A and tax controversy and litigation.

Clayton Utz elects indirect tax specialist as new partner

Australian firm Clayton Utz has announced the promotion of a new tax partner in its Sydney office as part of a wider programme of promotions that saw the creation of eight new partners.

Keshni Maharaj is a stamp duty specialist with more than 15 years' experience advising clients across a range of industries, including mining and resources, energy, finance, property and construction.

She has been with the firm since 2005, having previously worked as a lawyer at Blake Dawson – now Ashurst – and served as an auditor for the Australian Taxation Office.

Tax partner joins the New York office of Goodwin Procter

International firm Goodwin Procter has announced the addition of a new partner to its New York practice.

Romina Weiss, who joins the firm from Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, has broad experience in corporate and partnership tax matters.

Her experience includes the organisation private equity funds and advising them on continuing operations, portfolio investments and M&A transactions, as well as assisting clients with the tax aspects of capital-raising activities, such as IPOs, equity derivatives and debt offerings. She has provided such services for a range of both US and international businesses.

Pinheiro Neto Advogados becomes first Brazilian firm to expand into Asia

Pinheiro Neto Advogados has announced the opening of a local office in Japan, marking the first expansion by a full-service Brazilian firm into having a local structure in Asia.

Located in the Marunouchi neighbourhood of Tokyo business district, the new office is represented by equity partner Yuka Ono.

The move represents the firm's second foray into foreign markets, following on from the opening of its Palo Alto office in California in 2018.

Andersen welcomes new managing director to Boston office

Andersen, the US subsidiary of international tax network Andersen Global, has announced the addition of a new managing director of its offices located in Boston.

Jonathan Farrell joins the firm from DiCicco Gulman & Company, where he had served as a partner since July 2006. Prior to that, he acted as a tax manager for both Deloitte and Arthur Andersen.

His specific experience includes advising clients on the structuring of partnership and real estate taxation, taxable and non-taxable dispositions of property and exit strategies for owners.

Vertex welcomes new VAT director in the Netherlands

Tax technology solutions provider Vertex has announced the addition of a new VAT director.

Peter Boerhof, who is based in Amsterdam, joins the company from international paint and coatings giant AkzoNobel, where he served as the director of indirect taxes for more than 13 years. Prior to that, he had served in positions at Deloitte, Dutch telecoms company KPN and EY.

He brings with him extensive experience in international transactions, business restructuring, M&A, tax process optimisation and tax automation.

Kirkland & Ellis announces addition of tax partner in France

The Paris office of international law firm Kirkland & Ellis has bolstered is tax offering with the addition of a new partner.

Nadine Gelli joins the firm from De Pardieu Brocas Maffei where she was a partner for more than two and a half years. Prior to that, she had worked for more 14 years at Ashurst, where she eventually headed its tax practice.

She brings with her more than 20 years of experience in the market, advising on the tax aspects of corporate transactions with a particular focus on leveraged buyouts, financing and restructuring projects.

Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner expands Russian tax practice

International firm Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner has announced the addition of three senior associates (Tatiana Kirgetova, Dmitry Kirillov and Dmitry Paramonov) and an associate (Denis Kozhevnikov) to its tax team in Moscow.

Kirgetova joins the team from KPMG and had previously led the tax practice at Gide Loyrette Nouel, where she had been for 18 years.

Kirillov was previously with PKF MEF-Audit Auditing and Consulting Group, while Paramonov joins the firm from FBK Legal, where he had been for more than 14 years.

MHA MacIntyre Hudson announces merger with Keens Shay Keens MK

Accountancy firm MHA MacIntyre Hudson has announced it will merge its Milton Keynes operations with Keens Shay Keens MK.

The combined office will be one of the strongest in the region with almost 100 partners and professional staff on board.

Damma Legal Advisors welcomes new addition to Lima practice

Peruvian firm Damma Legal Advisors has announced the arrival of a new partner to its tax practice.

Rocío Liu joins the firm from Miranda & Amado, where she had practiced for the past 17 years and served as coordinating partner for tax and customs for more than 14.

Her experience includes tax planning for complex corporate reorganisations, bank deals and transactional work.

Marks Paneth names new principal-in-charge of Florida office

Accounting, tax and advisory firm Marks Paneth has announced that Robert Hughes will serve as the principal-in-charge of its Boca Raton, Florida office. In his role, he will oversee the development of the firm's high-net-worth practice.

He has been with the firm since 1997 and prior to that held a senior position as office auditor with the Internal Revenue Service.

Trench Rossi Watanabe welcomes new tax partner in São Paulo

Trench Rossi Watanabe – the Brazilian member firm of Baker McKenzie – has announced the addition of a new partner to its tax practice.

Maria Rita Ferragut joins the firm from Ferragut Mendonça Advogados, where she had been a partner for more than nine years.

She brings with her more than 25 years' experience as a lawyer and has a particular strength within judicial tax legislation. She is also a professor of tax law at the University of São Paulo.
