Chris Jordan to take ATO helm

Chris Jordan, formerly the head of KPMG in New South Wales, will succeed Michael D’Ascenzo as commissioner of the Australian Taxation Office in January 2013.

D’Ascenzo’s retirement, after a seven-year term, was announced late last month.

The new commissioner is an experienced tax professional. He has chaired the Board of Taxation, which advises the government on the development and implementation of tax legislation, and the operation of the tax system, since June 2011. He became a member of the board when it was set up in September 2000 and became deputy chairman in January 2005.

Before this, Jordan was chairman of KPMG New South Wales and partner in charge of the New South Wales tax and legal division of KPMG. He also chaired the Business Tax Working Group and the New Tax System Advisory Board.
