Marcos Joaquim Gonçalves Alves has left Mattos Filho to set up his own firm, MJ Alves & Burle Advogados e Consultores, taking several Mattos staff with him.

The new firm, which will focus on Brazil’s ballooning government relations sector but will also do some tax work, has three partners: Gonçalves Alves, Fernanda de Albuquerque Maranhão Burle and Leandro Modesto. The firm is based in Brasília, the capital of Brazil, and home to the country's embattled government.

Gonçalves Alves was at Mattos Filho for 20 years, specialising in corporate tax issues. The new firm remains on good terms with Mattos Filho.
