Peter Ackerman joined KPMG in Belgium in 1993 and was elected as a tax partner in 2001. He has specialised in VAT consulting for more than 20 years. Peter represents Belgium for KPMG's global indirect tax services practice.

Peter has been involved in various assignments across a range of sectors and has been involved in engagements globally on cross-border VAT planning, due diligence, implementation projects, mergers and acquisitions, commissionaire structures, transfer pricing and VAT compliance.

Peter has worked on international projects focusing on risk management, the development and implementation of tax planning strategies and cash flow optimisation across a range of industry sectors.

Peter is a frequent author and speaker on a variety of VAT issues.  He is a certified tax adviser and an active member of the exam committee of the Belgian Institute for Accountants and Tax Advisers (IAB-IEC).

Before joining KPMG in Belgium, Peter was with a law firm and a tax consulting firm.

Fernand Rutten is the global managing director, customs and global trade, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited (DTTL) and managing partner of the customs & global trade service line of Deloitte Belgium.

Fernand has more than 18 years experience in indirect taxes with a strong focus on customs, excises and global trade matters. Before becoming a consultant, he worked as a customs official with the Dutch customs authorities dealing with several customs and global trade matters, issuing rulings on customs valuation and customs economic procedures. Some 15 years ago, Fernand became a customs and global trade consultant. He further specialised in a variety of customs and global trade matters and built out a specialised group of experts serving clients in both the public and private sector on business model optimisation, automation, compliance, export controls, excises, litigation, valuation, origin, classification, and data analytics. In leading the Belgian customs and global trade service line, Fernand has advised clients on customs and global trade matters in many domains.

In May 2010, he became the global managing director, customs and global trade, DTTL.

For six years, Fernand was a lecturer at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands in customs and international trade. He also lectured for three years at the University of Antwerp in customs and international trade. In addition, Fernand is a regular speaker, has written many articles on customs and global trade, and has authored a number of books on customs and global trade matters.

Fernand has a law degree (University of Leiden, the Netherlands) with specialisation in Customs, International trade, Excises and VAT. He is a member of the Belgian Institute of Tax Advisors.

Johan Van der Paal is an indirect tax partner with Deloitte Belgium, based in Brussels. He heads the financial services tax group of Deloitte Belgium.

Johan has 19 years of experience as an adviser in indirect taxes, with a focus on VAT. He developed a focus on tax matters affecting the financial services and energy and utilities industries. He assists clients on a variety of Belgian and international indirect tax matters, both in the framework of the expansion of multinational groups or in a mergers and acquisitions context. He is coordinating global or regional indirect tax work for a series of European-based multinationals.

In the financial services industry, Johan's work includes setting up VAT efficient group structures and cost sharing arrangements, both on Belgian and cross-border levels. He negotiated a number of innovative arrangements with the Belgian tax authorities. His deep knowledge of the energy sector, both in Belgium and Europe, has allowed Johan and his team to help clients develop systems and processes to manage the different indirect taxes affecting their product flows, combining VAT, excise and environmental tax reporting.

Johan is a regular speaker at internal and external seminars. He is chief editor of the only periodical on the Belgian market dedicated to VAT, the BTW-Brief / La Lettre TVA. He is regularly consulted in his expertise domain by professional federations in Belgium on legislative initiatives.

Johan has a law degree from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven as well as a Masters degree in tax management from the Vlerick Management School.

Johan is a member of the Belgian Institute for Accountants and Tax Consultants (IAB), where he also sits on the Continued Education Commission.

Piet is the global managing director, indirect tax, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited (DTTL) and managing partner of Deloitte Tax & Legal Belgium. He is a member of the executive of Deloitte Belgium and the global tax & legal executive.

Piet has more than 23 years experience in international tax matters with a strong focus on indirect taxes. Some 18 years ago, he started to specialise in indirect taxes and has built a specialised group of indirect tax aspects in all areas (global outsourcing, supply chain, tax management consulting, public sector, international tax consulting, compliance customs, real estate matters). Piet has advised many clients on indirect tax matters in a variety of areas and has led the Belgian indirect tax service line for many years.

Since January 2008, he has led the Belgian tax & legal practice. In May 2008, he became the global indirect tax leader. Since then, he is also a member of the global tax & legal executive.

Piet is a lecturer at the KU Leuven. He has written many articles on VAT matters and is an author of a number of books on VAT matters.

Piet has a law degree (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven – cum laude) as well as a tax law degree (Fiskale Hogeschool – cum laude). He is a member of the Belgian Institute of Tax Advisors and a member of the Belgian branch of IFA.

Rony is the managing partner of Deloitte's indirect tax team in Belgium and part of the management of Deloitte Tax & Legal Belgium.

Rony has more than 30 years experience in international tax matters with a strong focus on indirect taxes. Before joining Deloitte in 1999, Rony worked 18 years for the Belgian Ministry of Finance, where he was, among others, tax inspector, tax collector and chief inspector responsible for several taxation offices in the field of VAT and corporate tax.

In 1999, he joined Deloitte as an indirect tax specialist. Rony became partner in 2003 and managing partner of the indirect tax department in 2009. The indirect tax team delivers services in the area of indirect tax global outsourcing, supply chain optimisation, tax management consulting, international tax consulting, indirect tax compliance, customs matters, and VAT related real estate matters.

Rony has extensive experience in advising multinational companies and national and international public entities on indirect tax matters in a variety of areas. He is also leading the Deloitte tax public sector team in Belgium, a team specialised in serving public entities, among whom the EU commission and many of the larger public entities in Belgium and abroad. Rony has vast experience in dealing with tax authorities.

Rony is also a speaker at numerous seminars for universities and other institutions on VAT-related issues in Belgium and abroad. Rony has authored several books and articles on VAT-related issues for the public-sector, for which he is considered as an authority in Belgium.

Rony's mother tongue is Dutch. He is fluent in English and French.

Rony holds a degree as master in tax management. He is a member of the Belgian Institute of Tax Advisors.
