Herbert Smith is advising Royal London of the UK on its £1.1 billion ($1.6 billion) acquisition of the business of Scottish Life. The acquisition is subject to approval by Scottish Life's members and the Court of Session, and is not expected to be completed until summer 2001.
Earlier this year Herbert Smith advised Royal London on its £1.5 billion acquisition of United Assurance.
The Herbert Smith team is led by Geoffrey Maddock and Robin Wittering in London, with Ross Fraser and Zoe Brown assisting on tax matters. Matthew Taylor at KPMG in London also provided tax advice. Scottish Life was advised on tax by John Preston at Pricewaterhouse-Coopers in London.
