François Fillon, the French prime minister has announced the government has abandoned the proposed carbon tax, which was due to come into force on July 1.
Defending his decision, Fillon said that a carbon tax had to be introduced at European level to protect the competitiveness of French businesses.
The French Constitutional Court had already called the legality of the tax into question.
