In this month’s round-up of individual and company changes, Andersen Global expanded into the Middle East, while several tax teams in Central America grew and a number of lead partners were appointed to major firms worldwide.

Winston & Strawn welcomes new tax partner in London

The London office of international firm Winston & Strawn has announced the addition of a new partner in its tax practice.

Ed Denny joins the firm from Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe, where he served as the head of tax.

His experience is in corporate finance transactions and structures, including M&A, international tax issues and the technology sector.

Andersen Global extends network in Bahrain

International network Andersen Global has announced its first foray into Bahrain.

It has signed a collaboration agreement with local firm Awael Al Bahrain Management Consultancy.

The local firm was first launched in 2014 as an alternative to the Big Four by the Managing Director Abbas Radhi.

Norton Rose Fulbright expands tax practice in New York

Norton Rose Fulbright has boosted its tax practice with the addition of a new partner in New York, focusing on criminal and civil tax issues.

Mayling Blanco joins the firm from Blank Rome, where she had been a partner since 2017.

Blanco focuses her practice on white-collar crime, government, criminal and civil tax issues. She has significant trial experience in federal courts, the US tax court and state courts.

Orrick appoints corporate tax partner

International firm Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe has announced the addition of a new partner in its corporate tax practice.

Jonathan Rosen arrives at the firm from Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, where he had been since 2014 and most recently served as senior counsel. Previously, he served at both Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Herbert Smith Freehills.

His experience has had a particular focus on technology, energy, infrastructure and finance.

Andersen Global expands its Middle East presence

One of the largest and oldest independent law firms in Oman, Al Alawi & Co, has announced the signing of a collaboration agreement with international network Andersen Global.

The collaboration with the Omani full-service law firms brings 37 years of professional experience in the Middle East to the network's offering, having been launched in 1983 by Ali Khamis Al Alawi.

The firm has two offices, located in Muscat and Salalah.

The moves marks the second agreement in a week that the network has signed an agreement in the region, having done so earlier in the month in Bahrain.

Facchini Rossi welcomes new lead partner

Italian boutique Studio Tributario Associato Facchini Rossi & Soci have announced that Riccardo Michelutti will join the firm as a lead partner.

Michelutti is a lawyer and accountant, with experience in corporate tax and international transactions, as well as tax disputes.

He joins the firm from Maisto & Associati, where he had been for nearly 23 years and was a partner since 2003.

With the arrival of the new partner, the firm will be re-named Studio Legale Tributario Facchini Rossi Michelutti.

Gibson Dunn bolsters its tax practice in New York

Gibson Dunn & Crutcher has boosted its tax practice in New York with the addition of partner Edward Wei.

The new partner joins the firm from Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft, where had had been partner since 2011.

Wei has a focus on a wide range of US and international tax matters, including private equity, M&A, IPOs, bankruptcy restructuring, REITs and other real estate transactions.

Simmons & Simmons welcomes new transfer pricing partner

International firm Simmons & Simmons has announced the addition of a new partner to its corporate tax practice in Central America.

Non-lawyer Tomoko Ikawa joins the firm from EY, where she had been for more than 11 years and most recently served as a transfer pricing associate partner.

Her focus in her new role will be on building the transfer pricing practice at the firm, with a particular focus on the life sciences and TMT sectors.

Thompson & Knight expands its tax practice in Texas

Thompson & Knight has boosted its tax team with the addition of a new partner to the firm's Houston office.

Louis Jenull joins the team from Jones Day, where he had been a tax partner since 2015.

The new addition has a focus on transactional tax, particularly in the oil and gas industry.

New tax compliance officer joins the team at DSR Tax Claims

Tax preparation specialists DSR Tax Claims has announced the addition of a new tax compliance officer.

Joanne Priestley joins the team at a time of rapid growth and expansion.

Her background is in the education sector and her role will see her providing first-line support to clients as well as dealing with HMRC.

New associate director and R&D tax specialist join RSM

Auditing, tax and consulting firm RSM has announced the addition of two new members to its team in Leeds, UK.

Associate Director Adam Jones has experience working in the private client space and has more than 30 years' experience working for the Big Four, most recently serving as a senior manager at EY.

R&D Tax Specialist Jade Bedford joins the team from KPMG and previously worked at Unilever as an R&D chemist.

HLB appoints new member firm in Brazil

HLB International – the global network of independent advisory and accounting firms – has announced its expansion in Latin America with the addition of a new member firm in Brazil.

HLB Brazil Pryor Consulting Solution, until recently part of Grant Thornton Brazil, joins the global network with a presence in 153 countries, including five Brazilian affiliates.

The newest member brings its focus on business process solutions, risk assessment, compliance and advisory through four offices in Brazil.

Linklaters appoints new head of tax in Italy

Roberto Egori has joined the Linklaters tax practice in Milan, Italy, where he will take on the role of head of tax.

He will lead a team of three other practitioners at the firm, with his personal experience being in providing domestic and international tax advice to financial institutions.

He joined the team from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, where he spent the past 15 years of his career, including the final two as a partner.

Herbert Smith Freehills opens German tax practice

Steffen Hoerner will join the Frankfurt office of Herbert Smith Freehills as the first tax partner at the firm in Germany.

Hoerner joins the team from Hengeler Mueller, where he has spent the previous nine years, including the previous year and a half as counsel.

He advises on all tax aspects relating to M&A transactions, as well as capital market and financing transactions. He is also experienced in representing clients in dispute and arbitration proceedings.

PVG welcomes new tax partner in Brazil

Perlman Vidigal Godoy Advogados has announced the addition of a new partner to its tax team in Brazil.

Maurício Braga Chapinoti joins the firm from TozziniFreire Advogados, where he had been tax partner for seven years. He had previously worked at Pinheiro Neto Advogados for 12 years and he had been a member of the international tax services team at EY in São Paulo.

Chapinoti brings with him an extensive background in various areas of law, particularly in tax consultancy and administrative litigation. He has accumulated broad experience in corporate restructuring, M&A, international tax planning and transfer pricing.

White & Case bolsters its global tax practice

White & Case has expanded its tax practice in New York with the addition of a new partner.

Hagai Zaifman joins the team from General Electric Capital. Most recently, he served as the tax director at GE Energy Financial Services, where he led the tax aspects of the disposal of a more than $10 billion debt and equity portfolio of US and foreign wind and solar projects.

It has been confirmed that he will work closely with the global project development and finance practice and global M&A practice in his role at White & Case.

Arbe Abogados appoints new head of tax

Arbe Abogados has boosted its tax practice in Lima with the addiction of new partner Luis Valle, appointed at the head of the Peruvian firm's tax practice.

He joined the team from international firm Garrigues and brings with him 19 years of experience in tax planning, consulting and advising on various tax issues.

Previously, he had worked at numerous firms such as EY, Hernández & Cía Abogados and Ferrero.

Bird & Bird hires Italian senior counsel

Giuliana Polacco has joined the Milan office of international firm Bird & Bird as senior counsel.

She previously spent a total of 25 years at Baker McKenzie, eventually becoming a local partner.

She will join a team of five other practitioners, including fellow Senior Counsel Susanna Scapigliati and Partner Gaetano Salvioli, who leads the Italian tax practice at the firm.

Andersen Global Polish affiliate integrates fully into group

KSP Legal and Tax Advice, the Katowice-based affiliate of global group Andersen Global, has announced the adoption of a new name.

The firm will now be known as Andersen Tax & Legal and joins with the wider existing Andersen Tax & Legal team already present in Warsaw.

The firm has more than 30 legal and tax advisors, while the wider group includes more than 4,500 professionals in 144 different locations.

Dentons Muñoz appoints new tax director in Costa Rica

Dentons Muñoz, the Central American arm of international firm Dentons, has announced the appointment of a new tax director to strengthen its transfer pricing offering in Central America.

Vladimir Blanco joins the firm from Grupo Camacho Internacional, where he had been since 2018. Prior to that he had worked as a transfer pricing manager at BDO and as a transfer pricing manager at Transfer Pricing Advisors.

The firm is looking to consolidate its offering, including its transfer pricing and international taxation services, especially in relation to recent tax reform in Costa Rica.

William Fry strengthens in-house compliance offering

William Fry has hired Breda Fitzmaurice as a consultant to lead the firm tax compliance practice.

She has joined the firm from KPMG, where she has spent the past four and a half years, including time as an associate director. Prior to working at KPMG, Fitzmaurice spent more than nine years at Grant Thornton.

She has experience with advising clients from a wide variety of sectors on tax compliance, from multinational corporations to SMEs.

Andersen Global continues its push into the Middle East region

International network Andersen Global has continued with its recent push to expand its presence in the Middle East by collaborating with a Kuwaiti firm.

Causeway Company For Financial Management Consulting will henceforth be known as Andersen Tax in Kuwait.

The move marks the third expansion into the region in recent weeks for the firm, having also recently announced a collaboration agreement with Awael Al Bahrain Management Consultancy in Bahrain and with Al Alawi & Co in Oman.
