Afonso Arnaldo, Deloitte Portugal, is a partner in the firm's indirect tax group (which was the first indirect tax group formed in Portugal). He has a law background and 20 years of professional experience in indirect tax, both in Portugal and abroad.

He is responsible for coordinating tax consultancy projects for several entities concerning VAT, customs, and excise duties matters to assist clients in planning and structuring their operations and optimising indirect taxes.

Afonso is also specialised, from an indirect tax perspective, in business model optimisation (BMO) services, offering insights into how multinational companies should integrate their operational and tax planning in a scalable and sustainable way in order to help business leaders make more effective decisions on an after-tax basis.

Cooperating with clients from every business sector, Afonso focuses on financial services, manufacturing, telecommunications, energy, distribution, transport, healthcare, and the public sector.

In 2014 Afonso was nominated by the Portuguese government as a member of the Portuguese Commission which reviewed the country's green taxes.

Afonso also serves as a faculty member in several courses held in Portugal and abroad about taxation issues and has published several articles in newspapers, tax magazines and tax books.

António Beja Neves, Deloitte Portugal, is a the leader and founder of his firm's indirect taxes group, which was the first indirect tax group created in Portugal. He started helping clients with VAT when it was introduced in Portugal in 1986.

António has a business management and chartered accountant background as well as 35 years of professional experience in indirect tax, both in Portugal and abroad.

António is also responsible for the coordination of tax consultancy projects for several entities concerning VAT, customs and excise duties and assisting clients in planning and structuring their operations to optimise indirect taxes. Eduardo Ferreira Gomes, Deloitte Portugal, indirect tax associate partner has 16 years of professional experience in indirect tax in Portugal, specialising in domestic and international VAT advisory services. His background is in business management.

Eduardo coordinates VAT consultancy and compliance projects, and helps clients plan and structure their operations to optimise indirect taxes. He is also responsible for the coordination of due diligence projects.

He works with clients in virtually all industry sectors but focuses more specifically on the healthcare and financial sectors, including private equity, real estate, banks and insurance.

Filipe Nogueira, is VAT Systems' chief operating officer and an indirect tax partner. Filipe has over 19 years' experience in indirect tax. He has a background in law and management and is also a chartered accountant.

Filipe assists clients with various transactions in both the private and public sectors in virtually all industry areas, including manufacturing, telecommunications, financial services, distribution, transportation, healthcare and public sector, where he works with municipalities and also universities. Filipe has coordinated several projects envisaging the improvement of the VAT efficiency of organisations.

He has published several articles in newspapers and tax magazines. Filipe has also participated as an instructor in several training programmes in Portugal and abroad.

Joana Nunes dos Reis, Deloitte Portugal, is a indirect tax associate partner.

She has a law background with a post-graduation in tax, and has 17 years of professional experience in indirect tax in Portugal, specialising in domestic and international VAT advisory services to local and global clients.

Joana coordinates VAT consultancy and compliance projects and assists clients planning their operations to optimise VAT. She is also very experienced with the coordination of the VAT area of due diligence projects and tax reviews in all industry sectors, and has been involved in major international VAT engagements, restructurings, mergers and other deals.

Joana advises clients from a range of industries but focuses more specifically on the real estate, consumer business, distribution, and manufacturing sector.

Joana is the learning coordinator for VAT within Deloitte and also serves as a faculty member for many courses on VAT and on leadership, both in Portugal and abroad.

Joana is co-author of the commented Portuguese VAT Code and has published several articles in newspapers and tax magazines. She is actively involved in local and international training and technical seminars.
