Julia Gillard, Australia’s prime minister, has confirmed that a price will be set on carbon emissions in 2012 despite making a pre-election promise that a carbon price would not be introduced under her government. There has been little indication from Gillard of the price the tax will be set at, and, some claim, there has been no assessment of the cost for industry and the economy.
